The Ministry of Education, Universities and Research

The Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research (MIUR) is the key RTD policy actor in Italy at state level.

The mission of the Ministry in Europe is focused on Integration of the European and international dimensions into education and training policies at the national, regional and local levels, as well as on implementation of the National Operational Programmes for development and cohesion of research.

The MIUR is responsible for the coordination, assessment and evaluation of the national university system and advanced training schools. The Ministry supports and fosters basic research in university and research institutions, programming intervention in public research institutions and supporting the integration between the research system and industries. This is in line with the aim of integrating public research and applied research and supporting research in the industry system.

Autonomous Province of Trento

The Autonomous Province of Trento (P.A.T.), is one of the two provinces of the Trentino – Alto Adige / Südtirol Autonomous Region in the Italian Alps. It is a self-governing province – and benefits from ample legislative and administrative powers in almost all the most important areas, which concerns, among other things, the economic, social, cultural and educational sectors.

Trentino matches top European nations investment in research, allocating several resources such as infrastructure, real estate and funds to encourage research and innovation (close to 2 % of its provincial GDP). This strong investment has always been accompanied by a forward-thinking and long-term policy vision, which set out clearly articulated goals, creating the encouraging background for the development of research centres and labs as well as a top ranking university.

The Province has the function of coordination between those promoting and those making use of scientific research, seen as essential and inalienable for the pursuit of its statutory and institutional objectives. The Department of Knowledge at PAT is, among other things, responsible for the strengthening, enhancement and modernisation of the research, educational, cultural and the scholar system in the province.
